Monday, May 20, 2024

PeaceWalkers walk from Voluntown to Norwich.

Norwich sends $61.03 million in taxes every year to Washington for the military.

10 am: Walkers depart from Voluntown Peace Trust, 539 Beach Pond Road

6 pm: Potluck and discussion at Voluntown Peace Trust, Ahimsa Lodge, 87 Forge Hill Road.

PeaceWalkers depart Norwich and walk to the Naval Submarine Base New London.

9 am: Vigil at Rep. Joe Courtney’s office, 55 Main Street, Norwich. Activists will go up to Rep. Courtney’s office and deliver Veterans For Peace letter detailing how weapons sales to Israel break U.S. law.

10 am: Walkers continue on to Naval Submarine Base New London.

3:30 pm: Vigil at Naval Submarine Base New London, corner of Crystal Lake Road, Groton

6 pm: Potluck and evening program at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 19 Jay Street, New London, CT

Walkers and local peace activists arrive at 8:30 am at the Coast Guard Academy in New London to greet attendees at the 2024 commencement ceremony.

8:30-10:30 am: Demonstrate at McKleney Park outside the US Coast Guard Academy, Williams Street, New London

10:30 am: Walk to Soldiers and Sailors Monument and City Pier for a chance to reflect on the work of Electric Boat across the River

Noon-1 pm: Lunch at Soldiers at Sailors Monument on State Street

1 pm: Walk to vigil at Electric Boat Engineering Building.

From Soldiers and Sailors, walk down Bank St., stop in front of Hygienic Park to remember the 1960-1961 San Francisco to Moscow Walk for Peace which was first envisioned at the Hygienic Restaurant in 1960.

Continue down Bank St. to Howard St., left to Pequot Ave., stand by the entrance to the EB Engineering Building.

2-3:30 pm: Vigil and rally as people leave work at Electric Boat facility in New London

5 pm: Dinner at Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock

Organized locally by War Resisters League, St. Francis House, Voluntown Peace Trust, CT Committee for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Walk to First Congregational Church of Guilford, 122 Broadway.

 

Monday, May 27, 2024 - Memorial Day

Walkers travel down to Norwalk to join the largest Memorial Day parade in Connecticut.

9:30 am: Meet in Norwalk at Veterans Park in Norwalk (42 Seaview Ave.) (If you are driving to the starting point, be sure to arrive early, as streets may be shut closer to the parade time.)

10 am: Parade leaves on 1.7-mile route to Norwalk Green, right in front of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

Stick around for a group photo and possible picnic in the park!

NOTE: If you are bringing signs, the parade organizers request that you reference peace only, and not war.

PeaceWalkers depart Branford and travel through East Haven before arriving in New Haven.

New Haven sends $206.69 million in taxes every year to Washington for the military.

10 am: Meet up at Staples, 85 N Main St #1, Branford, CT 06405

5 pm: Arrive at Palestine Museum, 1764 Litchfield Turnpike, Woodbridge, CT, for food, self guided tour of museum, speaker and movies about Palestinian experience.

10 am: Meet at New Haven-Union Station, 50 Union Ave., New Haven

Walkers leave Milford and travel through Devon and Stratford before arriving in Bridgeport.

Walk to Islamic Community Center, 703 State Street, Bridgeport

PeaceWalkers leave Bridgeport and travel through Black Rock, Fairfield, and Westport before ending the day in Norwalk.

10 am: Begin walking from the Islamic Community Center, 703 State Street, Bridgeport

Walk to Hole in the Wall, 653 Post Road, Fairfield, for lunch break

Shuttle to The Village Center, 605-645 Post Road East, Westport

Walk to Norwalk

4 pm: Arrive at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the New Haven Green (8 Park Street, Norwalk) for welcome, rest, and refreshments.

6 pm: Potluck dinner with congregants and invited guests.

Walkers leave Stamford and travel through Greenwich to arrive in Port Chester, NY.

Port Chester sends $151.1 million in taxes every year to Washington for the military.

9:30 am: Meet at Mill River Park Carousel Pavilion at 30 West Broad Street, Stamford

2 pm: Walkers help WESPAC celebrate its 50th birthday at the annual awards event in Rye, NY. (This event is not open to the public. If you wish to buy tickets, please visit the WESPAC website.)
